The Design Argument
- What type of argument is this?
-
Inductive: The argument is based on theory and things that don't have physical proof. The opening must lead up to the conclusion and it is reliant on the opening statement being reasonable and true. Therefore, the conclusion may not always be true, but the stronger the evidence, the more likely it is true.
-
Natural theology: Shows God's existence through science, nature, observation and reasoning. :eyes:

Paley's design argument states that there is evidence of design such as an eye (with order, purpose and patterns) in the world around us, and since everything that is designed needs a a designer the designer must be omnipotent and transcendent, therefore God.
This is teleological since 'telos' is Greek for goal and purpose and there is purpose in our universe. :earth_africa:
Paley's argument is based on 3 observations which are complexity, purpose and regularity.
Paley said "The marks of design are too strong to be gotten over. Design must have a designer." :male-artist::skin-tone-2:

- Analogies :speech_balloon:
You walk and trip on a stone. You ask how did it come about? Then you trip on a watch and use your observation and reason to conclude that the watch is complex and all the parts have a purpose, therefore the watch could not have occurred by chance, and only an intelligent watchmaker could have designed it. :stopwatch:
Similarly, because the universe is complex, it could not have occurred by chance and must have been designed by a designer with all the characteristics that God has.

- David Hume's Criticisms (philo)
David Hume was an empiricist, so he believe in theories that he could only see through experience. Since Hume died before Paley's natural theology was published it is good to say 'Hume's criticisms to the design argument may be applied to Paley's argument...' or 'some of Hume's criticisms of the design argument which apply to Paley's design argument include...'

- Strengths and weaknesses :muscle::skin-tone-2:
Strengths
As Swinburne said, the simplest explanation is always the best, and the idea of a single omnipotent God is the simplest explanation.
-
-
-
Weaknesses
-
Darwin and Dawkin help suggest that apparent order, purpose and design are just by chance.
-
-
If God had no beginning, why can't the universe have no beginning?
