Physical Geography of Greece
Mountains
80% mountains and hils
Cut Greece into seperate areas and people developed differently.
Travel and communication by land was very difficult
Greece is one of the most mountainous areas.
Had a massive impact on development of civilisation
Surrounded by Water
Situated on peninsula (land almsot completely surrounded by water)
Became primarily sea-faring people
Need to travel through water because of the mountains made land travel too difficult
Trade routes across the Mediterranean gave valuable resources
By the 5th century BC, Athens had a navy of 80,000 sailors and 400 ships
The trade across the water was needed because it ws very difficult to provide crops and lasting livestock over the harsh landscapes of Greece.
Seafood became a large part of diet
Many Islands
There are thousands of islands around Greece
More than 15,000km of coastline and beaches
The first people who came to Greece came by sea from the island of Crete approx 2300 BC
Having all these islands meant there were many small communities and ways of life spread of Greece
Warm, Dry Climate
Land between mountains was very fertile however the climate meant some foods weren't able to grow
It was available to grow grapes and olives mainly.
Trade was such a large part of Greek life due to these harsh conditions
Greek traded pottery, olives and oil to get grain and metals
