Cellular basis of life
-
Cell theory
-
7.5 trillion cells are found in the body; they work together to allow for proper functioning of the body
-
-
basic types of molecules found in cells: lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids
Cell Membrane: defined boundary that processes a definite shape but holds cells together and acts as protective covering
-
Homeostatic imbalance: semi permeable membrane only works when cell is healthy and alive; if cell is dead and harmed the membrane can no longer be selective
Passive Transport
filtration
pressure is applied to force water and its materials (solutes) across or through a membrane by fluid or hydrostatic pressure
-
facilitated diffusion
substance is helped in moving across the membrane, glucose is often helped
-
Active transport
-
endocytosis: used by cells for intake of liquid & food when substance is too large to diffuse across membrane
-
Cytoplasm
gel like substance composed of H2O, nutrients, and electrolytes, required by cells for their internal environment
-
chromatin: bunch of material that holds blueprints for creation of new cells, eventually forms chromosomes which contain genes
-
-
-
-
Mitochondria: rough and smooth; has ribosomes and doesn't synthesizes lipids and steroids; synthesis of protein
enzymes
enzymes speed up the rate of a chemical reaction; facilitate important chem reactions in body; special proteins; broken down chemicals
