Film Genre Conventions
ACTION
Action Movies: Star wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers.
Action films consist of car chases, explosions and destruction. This is all down to the special effects used when editing.
Action films use High tech machinery and props can include futuristic cars, guns and weapons.
The music consists of up beat nerve racking, keeping people on the edge of their seats.
Action films are mainly about a good guy and a villains
COMEDY
A comedy tends to include a main protagonist and a comedy duo.
Comedy Movies: The inbetweeners, Meet the Fockers, Dumb and Dumber.
The settings of comedy films are usually in well populated areas, like high schools, bars, homes.
A comedy can consist of rom com (romantic comedy) and Slapstick dark humour
Props can include, anything from water pistols to beer bottles
The typical camera angles that would be used are close ups, wide shots and long shots. A comedy would be filmed in bright lighting.
COMING OF AGE
This genre of film includes a moral story. It usually follows a teenage character going through life and being relatable to the viewer.
They are usually set when they are in high school, so schools, bedrooms and houses would be typical settings for this genre.
Their audience would be for a teenage range
The use of props would mainly include phones as this is an important part of a teenagers life-Social media.

HORROR
For a horror movie the settings tend to be in very dark places like woods or haunted houses. Other places can include abandoned houses, tunnels ect. Basically anything with that connotes being alone.
The use of camera work can include, low and high angles of the camera to highlight nightmares. POV are important in this genre because it allows the audience to see form the villains eyes.
Props can include weapons like guns, saws, knives
Disturbing sound effects can be heard throughout horror films, to crete more of a suspense.
Horror Films: IT, SAW, Carrie
Lighting is very non naturalistic with the use of shadows and flickering lights with colours like red and black.
The target audience would usually be a 15+ depending on the type of film, it could be a 12.
ROMANCE
Romantic films are mainly set at places like the beach, Diners or urban settings. Romance films can sometimes use big cities like Paris and New york.
In this particular genre sound can be both happy and sad. If there is a break up or a sad environment then instrumental music and soft lyrics tend to create the mood. But if there is a happy scene-mainly the ending then the up beat pop kind of music is used.
Props can include Flowers/Roses, hearts, restaurants, Jewelry, rings
Their target audience would usually be a 12+
Romance Films: The Notebook, Charlie ST.Cloud, P.S. I Love You
THRILLER
A thriller tends to use busy streets in urban and
suburban areas.
Camera angles can include close ups and extreme close ups to show their emotions. The shots of the rival character would be cut quickly to hide their identity. The use of a low key shot would help create a silhouette image or shadow.
Music isn't really used in this genre, they use more suspenseful tones to create tension. They also often use slow pace music which then gradually builds up to make the shots more dramatic.
Both bright and low key lighting are used to show the difference between the hero and the villain.
The props tend to be weapons and guns.
Thriller films: Inception, Get out, The Silence of the Lambs
The target audience would be a 15+ due to the nature of the violence and horror used
WESTERN
The typical location for a western movie would be in the deserted area of Texas/American west. Scenes can be shot around mountain, deserts and rivers.
Props can include cowboy hats, whips, horses, cactus, Boots, Bow and Arrows, pistols,cigars, trains,cattle
Camera angles are important when shooting a western, eye level close ups are common in this genre for when a shoot out is happening. Wide shots, mid shots are also used to shows the setting of the scene and show the characters expressions.
Natural lighting is used at each location. When they are in saloons the lighting is dimmed to create the atmosphere.
Sound effects are only used for the gun shots and explosions.
Target audiences would be 18+
Music would include sounds like drum beats, electric guitars.
Western Films: Bone Tomahawk, How the wild west was won, Silverado
SCI-FI
Props used in a Sci-Fi can be spaceships, lab coats, robots, high-tech gadgets, weapons.
In a Sci-Fi settings are mainly shown through green screens and special effects, some places that may be shown are space, spaceships, different dimensions, earth or alternative versions of the earth, Dystopia land.
Often a lot of shadows are used for lighting. Depending where they are lighting can be either really bright or dark if they are in space.
Target audiences are mainly 12+
Sci-Fi Films: Gravity, Blade Runner, Star Trek
ANIMATED
Animated Films: Big Hero 6, Frozen, Finding Nemo
This style of genre is mainly a children's based genre. So the target audience would be a U.
Text sets up style
A well known actor voicing the leads.
Often comedies
MUSICALS
Musical Films: Mamma Mia, Les Miserables, Grease
Musicals can often look as though they are set on a theatre stage. It also depends on where the story is set for example Mammia Mia-Greece, Les Mis- France.
Rather than adding music they sing their soundtracks throughout the film.
Target audience can be 12+ depending on the storyline.
The characters can sing and and dance looking towards the camera so wide shots and close ups are used.
