Many leaders don’t show leadership characteristics until they have been able to copy others or if there are other influences present that make them feel more confident.
Not considering the environment - not all leaders show leadership characteristics all the time but instead only when needed / demanded.

Captains may adopt the same leadership style as previous captains or coaches that they looked up to.
Criticisms

Being invalid due to not all people exposed to the same role models display the same leadership characteristics.
Interactionist
Suggests that innate and enduring traits interact with the environment to create leadership behaviour.
Certain traits can be triggered by certain environmental factors. E.g. Danger creates an autocratic style response
Criticisms

Doesn’t account for ‘natural born leaders’ those who display leadership behaviours in every situation
