Gender Inequality
Causes
Old-fashioned mentality
Previously, women were thought to be best suited for domestic work because they had always raised the children. Some people have passed these strict and confining ideas onto their children who still believe that women belong in the home.
-
Lack of Education
In many places because the value of a girl is deemed to be lesser, they are not educated unless the family has enough resources to support both their male and female children.
-
Religion
Some people use quotes from religious texts or beliefs of their religion as a way of rationalizing ideas of male superiority.
-
Femicide
Due to previous roles in society, some communities demonized women so much that they actually killed them (especially in China, as they could only have one child) to provide for males instead
-
Lack of representation
Women often do not have much representation in government or elsewhere. This can lead to ideas of inequality and lack of acceptance because women are not shown as leaders.
-
-
Feminine Ideals
What is or is not feminine is a big contributor to gender inequality. Women are supposed to uphold a standard of femininity and "ladylike" qualities. If a woman acts more traditionally masculine, she is often seen as an outcast, as women are not supposed to be powerful, but dainty and docile.
-
Division of labor
Women in the past were either confined to the home or unskilled jobs that were still very "womanly" like textile making while the men were in the fields and in the government.
-
Effects
Maternity Leave
The US is one of the two places in the entire world that do not ensure paid maternity leave. This could do with a lack of value or respect for the new mothers and their rights.
(In)affordable childcare
Because women are often seen solely as mothers, childcare is extremely expensive due to the idea that most moms will be willing to stay home and take care of their children because they are the woman.
Reproductive Rights
Because society sees women as the weaker sex, they often do not give adequate health education nor do women make the decisions about women's bodies.
Wage gap
Because women are seen as mothers who will focus on their children more than their work, they are often seen as less valuable employees and therefore, they receive less pay due to their gender.
Solutions
End child marriages:
Though we don't often think about this issue in America, we will get a lot closer to gender equality when we start finding a solution to forced or child marriages. Instead of forcing women to marry well-off men, we need to educate parents and women so that they understand that a woman can also be a breadwinner and get an education.
