Temporal basis: 1) cross- sectional study- intended to separate a population into meaningful subgroups. 2) longitudinal study- reveal population changes over time.

sources of error
random sampling error- chance variation and results in a sample that is not representative of population
systematic error
nonresponse errors- caused by subjects failing to respond to a survey. Compare demographics of sample and target population and make special effort to contact under-represented groups
response bias- when a response is falsified or misrepresented - intentionally or not. Acquiescence bias- yes- sayers. Extremity bias. Interviewer bias. Auspices bias- when they are interviewed by a people or organisation they hold in high esteem).
Social desirability bias- respondent wishes to create a favourable impression or save face.
administrative problems- inconsistencies in interviewers' abilities, interviewer cheating & coding mistakes.
