Alkali Metals
Reactions
Burn
The color of the flame is characteristic of the metal
K and Na burn when heated
Rb and Cs burn in air
Li melt before it burns
Water
All react to form the alkaline hydroxide
This is how they get their name
Oxygen
Turn gray/white as they oxidize
Ionization
The outer electron is lost so the electron is like a noble gas
The ion has a single positive charge
Non-metals
Highly reactive
Almost unusable in their metallic state
Francium (1939) is radiactiva and will not considered further here
Reactivity increases when you go down in the group
This is because the single outer electron is increasingly screened form the nucleus by the intervening electron shells
They do not appear in nature
They have to be stored in an inert liquid to keep them out of contact with water and air
A single electron in his outer s subshell
