MACBETH'S CHARACTERS
Macbeth
He’s a general of the Scottish army of the king
Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, King of Scotland
He’s a relative of the king
He has always been a good man
He is tormented by his conscience
He acts under the impulse of the truth contained in the prophecy of witches, which mixes with unspoken
or ambiguous things and also acts under the negative influence produced by love for his wife
He’s ambitious
He isn’t loyal with his friend and his king
He’s dark and close (at the beginning brave)
He has two sides
He’s easily influenced
He will do anything to became king and get power
He’s easily influenced
He has doubts (human person, human being)
Lady Macbeth
She’s Macbeth’s bad wife
She’s more ambitious than his husband
She desires power and she’s devious
She persuades, pushes and seduces
her husband to kill the king to get power
At the beginning she seems to be the strongest
At the end she is the weakest of the two
She gets crazy (she falls victim of madness and guilt)
She continuously washes
her hands (to remove the "blood" sin)
Duncan
He’s the king of Scotland
He’s a good and loved king
He’s popular, benevolent and astute
He votes for justice and goodness
Even if he isn’t the best king
His death symbolizes the destruction of the order
Banquo
He’s a brave and noble general of the Duncan’s army
He’s too doubtful (witches’ prophecies)
He’s ambitious
but he’s also too intelligent, conscientious,
reasonable and moral
At the end he is angry with Macbeth
His ghost torments Macbeth
Malcom & Donalbain
They are two brothers, Duncan’s sons
Malcom is the eldest son
Malcom at the end becomes the new king of Scotland
Restoration of the order
After the Duncan’s death, Malcom flees to England and Donalbain flees to Ireland
Macduff
He’s the Scottish Thane of Fife
He wants vengeance against Macbeth
Because he had killed his wife and children
At the end he beheads Macbeth’s head
The Three Witches
They predict the Macbeth’s future and destiny
They symbolize the supernatural presence,
the destiny, the future
They are too ambiguous
They want to confuse
