Section I
Three meanings
First meaning - Academic one where anyone who teaches, writes about, or researches the Orient is and Orientalist and what they do is Orientalism
Second meaning - More general meaning. Style of thought based upon the ontological (what is the essence of a "thing"?) and epistemological (production of knowledge) distinction made between "the Orient" and "the Occident"
Third meaning - Orientalism is a corporate institution for dealing with the Orient (had an institutional network (courts, educational inst, etc) which were complimenting each other)

Orientalism is a cultural understanding ----- discourse and discoursive formation which is a set of assumptions which makes an argument consistent (limit of the sayable)

Orientalism is the western representations of the Orient. Orientalism - a way of coming to terns with the Orient that is based on the Orient's special place in European Western experience.
