After the fall of the Tang Empire the rival warlords divided China.
In 960 a general named Taizu and proclaimed himself the first Song Emperor.
China would prosper under the three centuries of the Song Dynasty.
The Song never regained the land lost to nomadic people in the North.
What concerns might Song Emperors have had when buying peace from their Northern Enemies?
China bought peace from its Northern enemies with tributes of silver, silk, and tea. This policy failed to prevent threats from the North.

Manchurian people known as the Jurchen conquered the North and established the Jin Empire.

During the Tang and song the population of China almost doubled.
China became the most populous country with over 100 million people. With that it became the most advanced.
Artisans and scholars created new technology including movable print and gunpowder.
Gunpowder
- The development of gunpowder lead to explosive weapons such as cannons, bombs, grenades, and small rockets.
Movable Print
- Printers were made so that a single wood or medal block contained one character.
Many blocks could be arranged in a frame and print an entire page at once.
Other advancements included porcelain, paper money, mechanical clocks, and magnetic compasses.
Advancements were also made in mathematics, Ideas like algebra and negative numbers spread through China.
Trade
Advancements to agriculture continued as farmers cultivated rice, and a new variety from Vietnam was used.
