China gained a lot of social changes during the Tang and Song periods.
The gentry was formed, a upper class that emerged.
Below that was the merchants, shoe keepers, skilled artisans and minor officials.

Women had always have to obey the men.
It got even worse later on during the Tang and Song periods.
Women's work became even less important.
One change that happened to the status of women was the new custom of foot binding.
