HIRCHSPRUNG' S DISEASE
DEFINITION
is a birth defect in which nerve cells are missing at the end of a child’s bowel (small and large intestines).
PATHOPHYSIOIOGY
During normal embryonic development, neural crest cells migrate to the small and large intestines and establish the enteric nervous system. In Hirchsprung' s disease, however, they fail to supply the distal parts of the large intestine, leaving the sigmoid colon and rectum without enteric ganglia.
