Igneous
FOMATION:
Magma that has cool on / below the ground (Extrusive / Intrusive)
CHARACTERISTICS:
tough / resistant: igneous rock, often found in uplands
EXAMPLES:
Dartmoor - Granite
Northern Ireland - Basalt
Cuillin Hills - Gabbro
Sedimentary
FORMATION:
Rocks formed from accumulation or compaction of sediment - usually in the ocean
CHARACTERISTICS:
harder rocks form uplands and softer rocks form lowlands - from erosion
EXAMPLES:
Chalk - Lincolnshire, The South Downs
Limestone - The Penines
Sand / Gravel - Lowlands in Southern England
Metamorphic
FORMATION:
existing rocks that have changed due to extreme heat or pressure
CHARACTERISTICS:
very tough and resistant to erosion, often forming uplands
EXAMPLES:
Slate, Schist and Gneiss form uplands - Snowdonia, The Scottish Mountains
