People do not actually vote for the candidate but they vote for 538 'electors' who will formally elect the president

Candidates travel to most states to meet voters
Primary elections are held in every state and registered party voters select their party's candidate

each party hold's a National Convention
They formally nominate their final candidate for president
Each state has an Electorall College
with is proportional to the population of the state
They meet in December in each state capital to elect president and vice-president
Electors vote for the candidate who, in November, got most votes from the people of the states
