Module 8: Reflection
The video started off with a text saying "nothing in excess" which reminded me of the seven deadly sins. I wonder why this would be considered a bad thing?

The Aristocrat, Solon, reminds me of most big companies. Like, Best Buy, McDonalds, and Bill Gates have scholarships. They award high school senior with money for college. Solon tried to help the poor.

It is funny that meat used to be a luxury. Nowadays, there are so many vegetarians and vegans. Some of these dishes can actually be more expensive than meat. My friend is vegan and she spends more money of food than I do.
With the way we produce meat now, I don't think many children, or people in general, realize where our meat comes from. It comes from living things.
I don't think many of us, at least those living in well-developed countries, realize that food can be a luxury. At least I never considered food to be a luxury. It was always just there. School offered free food. When I'd get home from school there was already food waiting for me. It wasn't until I started driving and I'd have to buy food on my own that I realized just how expensive food can really be.
Wonder if everyone in Athens considered meat a luxury? Personally, I don't like crab, chicken, fish, or turkey; thus, I wouldn't consider it fine dining or luxurious.
The luxury of meaty back then could be compared to our technology nowadays. If you have an iPhone X, you are seen as someone who has the means to buy the newest phone.
I think we have and always will live in a society in which comparing ourselves to others is habit. These comparisons cause us to form our definitions of luxuries. As a child, I have always wanted a trampoline, but my parents wouldn't let me have one because they saw it as a waste of money. I remember thinking that my friends with trampolines had more money.
Are luxuries really that bad? Personally, luxuries are my motivation. In high school, I worked because I wanted to save money for college and clothes. So, are they really as bad as the video makes them seem? Or, is it only bad in excess?
Greek tragedies became a thing once citizens wanted to have more private luxuries. Athenians wanted to show off their money.
