Introduction To Chemisrty
The Five Areas Of Chemistry
Inorganic Chemistry: The Study of chemicals that do not contain carbon. Example:An inorganic chemist might explain how a lack of calcium can affect the growth and repair of the bones.
Organic Chemistry:Defined as the study of all chemicals containing carbon. Example: athletes inhale chemicals devolved by organic chemist to control symptoms of asthma.
Biochemistry: The study of processes that take place in organisms Example:A biochemist might study how the energy used for the contraction of muscles is produced and stored.
Analytical Chemistry: The area of study that focus on the composition of matter. Example: Analytical chemist develop test to detect chemicals in the blood. The test help show if the organ in the body are working properly.
Pure and Applied Chemistry
Pure Chemistry:The pursuit of chemical knowledge for its own sake.
Applied Chemistry: research directed toward a particular goal or application.
nylon:Wallace Carothers produced some materials nylon, can be drawn into long, thin, silk-like fibers, by 1939 the engineers had a perfected method of making nylon.
Asprin: In 1971 a group of researchers dicovered that asprin coukd block a group of chemical that cause pain and the same chemicals are also involved in the formation of blood clots.
Technology: The development of aspirin and nylon belong in a system of technology
Why study Chemistry?
Chemistry can be useful in explaining the natural world, preparing people for career opportunities, and producing informed citizens.
Agriculture
Chemist help to develop more productive crops, and safer, more effective ways to protect crops.
Productivity: A way to track productivity is to measure the amount of edible food that is grown on a given unit of land.
crop protection: for many years farmers have used a certain set of chemicals to attack insect pest. These chemicals were nonspecific in the past; that is, a chemical designed to kill a pest and could also kill useful insects. now most farmers use other insects as a way to kill off the harmful ones.
Enerrgy
Chemist play an essential role in finding ways to conserve energy, produce energy, and store energy.
Conservation: One way to conserve energy through the use of insulation.
Production:The burning of coal, petroleum, and natural gas are all key points of the source of energy.
Medicine and biotechnology.
Medicines:Over 2000 prescription drugs which are designed to treat various conditions. Many drugs are effective because they interact in a specific way with chemicals.
Chemistry supplies the medicines, materials, and technology that doctors use to treat patients.
Materials:Chemistry can supply materials to repair or replace the body.
Biotechnology: applies science to the production of biological products or processes.
The enviorment
Identifying pollutants: in 1971 lead was discovered to be found in many paints and gasoline.
Chemist help to identify pollutants and prevent pollution.
Prevent pollution: Testing for lead in the blood, regulation of home sales to families, and public awareness.
The universe
To study the universe, chemist gather dad from afar and analyze matter that is brought back to earth.
Solving numeric problems
The steps for this include, analyze, calculate, and evaluate.
Analyze: First determine where you are starting from, where you are going, after this you have to get a plan from getting to the unknown to the known.
Calculate:For some problems you will have to convert a measurement from one unit to another or you may need to re arrange an equation before you can solve the unknown.
