Definition
A liver abscess is a pus-filled mass inside the liver
Medical management
Nursing
Antibiotics: IV metronidazole and third generation cephalosporin/quinolones, β-lactam antibiotics, and aminoglycosides are effective.
Health education
diet and lifestyle modification. Promoting home and community based care. Maintain hygiene to prevent infection
Surgical
Draining the abscess is the ideal therapy, however in some severe cases a liver transplantation may be rrquired
Causes
They are usually caused by a bacterial infection. Often many different types of bacteria are involved in a single infection
Risk Factors
bacteria from a ruptured appendix that forms an abscess
pancreatic cancer
colon cancer
inflammatory bowel disease, such as diverticulitis or a perforated bowel
a blood infection, or septicemia
trauma to the liver by accident or injury
Assessment findings and symptoms
a CT scan with intravenous contrast, or injected dye, to find and measure the abscess
Pathophysiology
A liver abscess is a collection of pus in the liver caused by bacteria, fungi, or parasites. You may have more than one abscess. The liver makes enzymes and bile that help digest food and gives your body energy.
