there is decreased oxidative metabolism of the brain which causes cerebral dysfuction due to neurotransmitter systems. eldery patients are most likely to develop delirium due to age related cerebral changes.

this is an acute confusional state that may be associated with number of underlying medical, physical and psychological problems.
