What is mental illness?
Mental illness is the term used to describe an illness that affect the mind rather than the body. Many different type of mental illness can affect your mind, just as there are many different physical illnesses which can affect your mind.

Mental illness has a chance of being a temporary illness. Some mental illness can be cured by talking treatments or a psychotherapist .

Most mentally ill people are more likely to inflict danger upon themselves rather than other people, but a small minority may become violent if threaten.

How common is mental illness
Out of 100 people 15 of them could have a mental illness at some point of their lives they will have a mental illness. As a result of that its likely that a friend or a family member will have mental illness.

What is a nervous breakdown?
It can be difficult to describe a mental illness exactly, we sometimes say that a person has had a 'nervous breakdown', we use this to cover a wide range of mental states that makes it difficult for a person to cope with life.

Why are people so afraid of mental illness?
One reason is that people seem to think they will be regarded as weak or strange, however, anyone can become mentally ill, it's nothing to be ashamed

Some types of mental illness
Bipolar Disorder: Causes changes in mood from high sprits to over activity to deep depression.
Schizophrenia: Can lead to a person hearing voices, the voices can tell the person what to do pr may produce strong feelings of confusion.
Dementia: In elderly people when someone suffers may become forgetful or confused and their behaviour becomes unpredictable.
Obsessive compulsive disorder: For example, they may feel that they have to keep things clean and arranged.
How does this make you feel?
(Justin) If a certain relative of yours which is important to you has changed into a very different person, it may seem that no one is there for you, you may feel sad, angry or lonely. It always help to talk to someone who understands. but remember, it is not your responsibility to make them well.
(Justin) A way to help someone in your family who is mentally ill is by accepting it, giving sympathy and support.

Depression can mean many different things, because there are different types of depression. Mild depression makes you feel low, but it doesn't stop you from doing everyday things.

Symptoms of depression among teenagers
You may be preoccupied with negative thoughts and seeing the worst in everything.
Perhaps you feel that you cannot make friends.
You may wake up early in the mornings and not be able to go back to sleep.
Work or study may seem like a waste of time.
You may feel awkward and tense when you are with others.

How to defeat depression
When you are in the state of depression you have to be aware when thinking and what you can do to defeat it. things you can do to defeat depression are:
Find interesting things or hobbies you can do to forget about depression
Do whatever that makes you laugh/happy.
