Kohlberg's Stages of Development
Social Contract
Person becomes aware that the other people have individual thoughts and feelings and moves to respect them
Begins to see laws as a type of social contract that can be changed if they do not serve the best interests of the people
Happens in Adults
Obedience/Punishment
Happens in infancy
The person is not aware of what is right and wrong until facing a punishment
Learns through punishments to become obedient
Conformity and Intrapersonal Accord
Becomes focused on being a "good" member of society
Looks for approval of actions from others
Happens in adolescents
Authority and Social Order
Person becomes aware of society's laws and moral standards
Focuses on upholding and obeying these laws
Occurs in the late teens and early adulthood
Self Interest
Primary focus is centered on oneself. "What's in it for me?" attitude.
Performs action that primarily benefit themselves
Happens at 2-7 years
Universal Principles
Happens very rarely
The individual sees laws through the eyes of others and feels an obligation to act in the interests of others as well
Will participate or disobey laws that do not follow their idea of justice for all
