I’m an avid Brazilian. And, here is what it has taught me.
food is culture there is history behind it
food is an social activity and fuel
Pao de Queijo
Fuba Soado
Created in the state of Minas Gerais. People wanted to make bread, but only had tapioca flour. They combined it with cheese, and made the famous Brazilian cheesy bread called Pao de Queijo
Today it is eaten all over the rural parts of Brazil, but it was originally created during times of slavery. Slaves only had milk and flour, so they combined the both in a hot pan to make food. Nowadays, it is made with cheese and rapadura (solidified cane sugar)
family is important
being respectful to my elders is expected
Always ask for your elder's blessing.
Always say hi. Always hug. Always greet people you know.
Being kind is necessary.
You stop by your aunt's house to say hi and you leave 4 hours later. Always.
World Cup season is a national holiday
It is common for restaurants, bars, and houses, and the city to be filled with people watching the game.
It is often acceptable to leave work early to watch the games that Brasil is playing.
World Cup season is most likely the only time you will see Brazilian flags hung up by residents.
Always be for something because positivity is so much easier to come by when you create it yourself
Music is important; music shapes culture
Sertanejo is appreciated through multiple generations, from elders to adults to teenagers to children
Samba shapes carnival, and the carioca culture
Festa junina and quadrilha often go hand in hand. The festa junina started as a party created by the Catholic Church to celebrate Saint John. Nowadays, people dress up as exaggerated country folks and go to the party in the most ridulous way they can master.
