1997 THREDBO LANDSLIDE
LIFECYCLE FAILURE POINT
-
DE-COMMISSIONING
Road had been ineffectively handed over to National Parks and Wildlife (Office of the State Coroner 2000 p. 19).
The expected life of the road had not been taken into consideration by National Parks (Office of the State Coroner 2000 p. 22).
National Parks and Wildlife failed to decommission road after handover (Office of the State Coroner 2000 p. 37).
COMMISSIONING
No independent review of road after power station hand over (Office of the State Coroner 2000 p. 6).
CONSTRUCTION
-
-
-
-
-
-
Road was built cheaply as it was only meant to be a power station access road and construction pathway. (Thredbo Landslide 2018).
Alpine Way built with substandard foundations, poor alignment, was poorly constructed and had innefective drainage and was excessively steep (Office of the State Coroner 2000 p. 33).
CONCEPT
Design scope was flawed as road should have been engineered (Office of the State Coroner 2000 p. 33).
Power station construction only required a temporary road to be built, not as a permanent road (Office of the State Coroner 2000 pp. 32-33).
The road was not considered for sustainability as was meant to be only a temporary structure (Office of the State Coroner 2000 p. 32-33).
-
-
No review process in place to ensure engineering was sufficient for task (Office of the State Coroner 2000 pp. 32-33).
