The author, who was 17 y/o at the time, used a pretty rich vocabulary for her book. She uses a realistic vocabulary in dialogues, such as «we ain't».

The author employed many expressions that were used in the 60s, such as chick (even though it was first created in the 20s, people used it in many decades, even now) and to cuss out, which means to swear or insult someone you're annoyed at.
