This was able to happen because of the poor planning and slow marching of the GB General Burgoyne. He planned to cut off NY from the rest of the colonies. The iroquois and GB were held off by farmers when fleeing. THey then fled to Saratoga.

Turning point in the war and forced Burgoyne to surrender and leave America with 5,500 soldiers
