• Abuse is not limited but elder abuse has been a problem that has been in existence for so long as there have been older people
• The emergence of elder abuse as a social problem is due to recognition of the problems which occur
• Right of elders are protected in south African constitution but there is no mechanism that exist to ensure that these right are respected

• Restraints are the most form of physical abuse commonly found in hospitals causing the patient to be aggressive and frustrated

• Where the complaint is found valid, reassurance of the patient and reinforcement to the caregiver but be done that abuse is not acceptable
• Counselling and support by the nurse, both the elderly person and the caregiver, helps to re-establish trust
