Polycystic kidney disease
This is the genetic hereditary disorder in which many cysts form in one or both kidneys. This may be present at birth or may manifest in childhood.
Pathophysiology
Nurmerous cysts develop in the kidney.
Kidney substance is destroyed.
Both kidneys are usually affected.
Kidney functioning is affected.
This result in kidney failure.
Cysts may develop in other organs such as liver and lungs.
Signs and symptoms
High blood pressure
Back or side pain
Headache
feeling of fullness in your abdomen
Blood in the urine
Kidney failure
Urine tract or kidney infections
Common assessment findings
Family history of polycystic kidney
Abdomen may be distended
Kidneys may be palpable as a hard mass
Nursing management
Assess the fluid and electroyte status
Assess for indication of decreasing renal function
Report changes in cardiac or neurologic status also
Psychosocial support
Give health education
fluid and diet restrictions
Symptoms of renal failure
Medication knowledge
Dialysis
Surgical management
Nephrectomy
