Growth in Teenage or Adolescence
Common:
Some body changes are common to boys & girls
Thick hair grows in arm pits & the genital areas between the thighs
Thinner hair also appears on the legs & arms & on the face
The skin frequently becomes oily & pimples develop
The person becomes conscious or aware of one's own body & that of others
Girls:
The size of the breast increases & the nipples darken, they begin to menstruate
Boys:
They have thick hair growth on their face, voice begins to crack
The penis occasionally becomes large & erect either in daydreams or in the night
These changes occur over a period of months or years
In some people it happens early & quickly, in others it may happen slowly
Just as we have different types nose or hair, the size of breast or penis or hair growth patterns are different in different people
These changes are signs of
sexual maturation
in the body
Why does Sexual Maturation occur during Teenage?
As a child is growing, most of the resources are used for achieving growth
During that stage maturation of reproductive organs is not given priority
As the growth of the general body starts to slow down, reproductive organs begin to mature.
This period during adolescence is called
Puberty
If animals have to mate, their state of sexual maturity should be identifiable to other individuals
A male is mature for sexual act only when the penis is capable of becoming erect
In females, the baby is carried inside the mother's body for long periods & has to be breast fed - the female reproductive organs & breasts have to be mature for this
