Water Properties and Distribution Concepts
How are Cohesion and Adhesion related to polarity?
Cohesion- the positive and negative sides of different water molecules attract each other
Adhesion- The positive side of water and the negative side of another substance attract and vice versa
How are Surface Tension and Capillary Action related to Cohesion and Adhesion?
Surface Tension- The water will stick to the edge of the body of water (adhesion), and then spread tight across the top when cohesion sticks the water molecules to each other
Capillary Action- adhesion climbs water up the wall of a tub, and cohesion brings more water up with it.
What are the places water is found on Earth?
Oceans- 97%
Ice- 2%
Groundwater- 0.85%
Surface Water- 0.1%
Atmosphere- 0.05%
Where is Freshwater found?
Surface Water- Ice (glaciers, icebergs, poles), lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, etc.
Groundwater- Water you'd pull up from wells
7 processes of the Water Cycle
Runoff
Evaporation
Infiltration
Transpiration
Precipitation
Respiration
Condensation
How is a river basin related to the water cycle?
When precipitation falls in a certain area, the runoff in a certain river basin goes to that river.
What 2 processes happen when water reaches the ground?
Infiltration and Runoff
The amount of water and and how permeable the surface is affects which one happens
Why are Riparian Buffers important?
They provide shade, limits sediment dump, protects against sound pollution, and more
