As a society, we don't mind our age but we do mind the physical implications of it, hence the millions, possibly billions of shelves of cosmetic products anti-ageing products in shops.
My own thought: I am not sure I agree with Nessa Carey, as from my own experiences I have found that people treat older people differently as soon as they find out their age if they look younger.
As a society, we dislike not only the trivial side effects of ageing but also the diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's.

Due to the epigenome's plasticity, the epigenome is much more subject to change than the genome in ageing.
Studies done on people from Iceland and Utah show that DNA methylation in white blood cells chnages over time- methylation increased or decreased as people aged in different people.

Many illnesses develop due to degradation of DNA integrity- random mutations occur, chromosomal rearrangements take place etc... Mutations are somatic so do not affect the germline.

Medicine now has improved longevity and quality of life due to major advances in stopping childhood death such as vaccinations against polio meaning it has almost been eradicated.
