Cause and Effect of the Spanish Conquest
Smallpox
Smallpox is a short term disease, Spreads easily, disfiguring, often deadly.
Caused by either Variola major or Variola minor
Variola Major is more common and deadly.
Variola Minor is not as severe and much less common.
Short Term Impact
During the conquest, a 3rd of the Aztecs in Tenochtitlan was killed
Weakened the Aztec army.
Evened out the population.
Killed surrounding nations.
No more access to crops around their region
Spreads via prolonged face to face contact, or contaminated objects, such as clothing or bedding.
Long Term Impact
Killed a 3rd of the Aztec population
Led to a decrease in population in Mexico City even today.
Siege of Tenochtitlan
Hernan Cortes was a Spanish Expedition leader who went out to find land to claim it under the Spanish King's name.
He Arrived in Tenochtitlan on November 8th 1519
On his way, he gathered neighbouring tribes and people who hated the Aztecs and formed alliances with them, most noticeably the Tlaxcalans.
At first the Spanish were welcomed because the Aztecs thought they were gods who returned.
But soon after the arrival they began to have suspicions and they were confirmed by a Spanish group of soldiers attack a peaceful Aztec ceremony.
The war between them started, lasting a long time.
At the end, the Spanish (aided by the quick spreading and deadly smallpox) were able to successfully conquer Tenochtitlan, but suffered enormous losses.
Short Term Impact
The Aztecs were defeated.
The Spanish took many of the remaining Aztec population back to Spain as slaves.
The surrounding nations began to loot the conquered city.
Long term impacts
The Siege lasted a long time, and the Aztecs were forced to starve for a long time as well.
Increased Exploration and Migration.
When the Spanish conquered the Americas, it opened up a lot of trade routes across the world; and another place to live in.
Many Spanish and Portuguese travelled there and started living there.
Short Term Impacts
There were a lot of people moving to the Americas to live, and that required more slaves. So the Spanish bought over slaves from Africa to help.
Long Term Impacts
The Discovery and conquering of the Americas made Spain a World Power.
Spain was also made very wealthy because the Americas had lots of gold.
New Goods and Foods for European Culture
The colonisation of the Americas opened up many trade routes,
Food was often transported across these trade routes.
Corn/Maize
Tomatoes
Potatoes
Avocadoes
Pineapples
Strawberries
Chilli
Short Term Impacts
The nutritious foods that came form the Americas changed peoples daily diet, making them more healthy.
It changed many countries culture. Maize and Tomatoes in Italy, Chillies in India.
Long Term Impacts
The increase of nutritious foods made the world a lot healthier and triggered a massive population boom.
Much fewer people have starved because of the Colombian Exchange.
Cigarettes were very popular because of tobacco and is still used in the world today, even though we have discovered that it has a negative effect on our bodies.
