Obstruction of the urinary tract
Definition
Disturbance in the normal flow of urine due to an obstruction by foreign body such as tumours
Pathophysiology
Obstruction to outflow of urine may occur at any part of the urinary tract and May be partial or complete. Obstructions may be caused by internal (inside the lumen) or external factors
Causes
Kidney stones
Tumours (benign and malignant) of the bladder and kidneys
Inflammation or abscess in the urinary tract
Pressure of a pregnant uterus
Enlarged prostate gland
Kinks and strictures in the ureters, bladder neck and urethra
Risk factors
Pregnancy
Prostate cancer
Trauma to ureters, bladder neck and urethra
Assessment findings and symptoms
Dilatation of the kidney pelvis
Infection and renal stone formation
Decreased urinary output
Stagnation and stasis
Signs of renal failure due to destruction of kidney tissues
Hypertrophy of unaffected kidney
Severe colicky pain or aching on the flank and back
