Definition
Croup is a childhood respiratory illness caused by a variety of viruses and is usually contracted in autumn and winter months. It is characterised abrupt onset of a burky cough and inspiratory stridor and distress.
Pathophysiology
Viral invasion of laryngeal leads to inflamation, hyperemia, edema, epithelial necrosis and shedding of this region. This leads to irritation and narrowing of the subglottic region. Children compensate for narrowing of upper airway by breathing more quickly and deeply. Respirator failure and arrest result due to hypoxic and hypercapneic.
