11th Grade Student Expectations
Validity of a message is determined by its accuracy and relevance
Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grades 11-12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
Critique the accuracy, relevance, and organization of evidence of a presentation
Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives; synthesize comments, claims, and evidence made on all sides of an issue; resolve contradictions when possible; and determine what additional information or research is required to deepen the investigation or complete the task.
Listen critically to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the presentation
Analyze the resources cited for validity
Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media in order to make informed decisions and solve problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any discrepancies among the data.
Evaluate a speaker's point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, assessing the stance, premises, links among ideas, word choice, points of emphasis, and tone used.
9th Grade Student Expectations
Listening critically to comprehend a speaker's message requires mental and physical strategies to direct and maintain attention
Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Follow the speaker's arguments as they develop; take notes when appropriate
Give verbal and nonverbal feedback to the speaker
Ask clarifying questions
Evaluate arguments and evidence
Explain how variables such as background knowledge, experiences, values, and beliefs can affect communication
Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source.
