Stress: life changes and individual differences
life changes
both pos and neg life event can be a source of stress
they involve change that uses psychic energy- leaving less energy available to defend against illness
Holmes and Rahe (1967) developed a Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS)
lists 43 pos and neg life events
tot live event scores calculated by adding up the life change units (LCUs)
indiv who score greater than 300 LCUs over a period of 1 yr. are at a greater risk of physical and metal illness
Rahe et al. found a small but significant association between the stress of life event and physical illness
Daily hassles
an alternative approach to life events is to consider the ongoing stressors of daily life (e.g. losing things ect.)
DeLongis et al. (1982) developed a Hassles scale
compared this to a life event scale
100 ps aged 45-64 completed 4 questionnaires once a month for a yr.
a) hassles scale
b) uplift scale
c) life event questionnaire
d) health status questionnaire covering overall health status, bodily symptoms and energy levels
the frequency and intensity of hassles were significantly correlated with overall health status
Evaluation
the same hassles may be experienced on different occasions and differently for diffenrent people
it ignores chronic sources of stress (e.g. low income)
sample was bias in terms of age (45-64)
older people tend to have less severe and fewer hassles then younger people
it may have been more useful to focus on particular hassles (e.g. poor housing
what is stress

Stress is the response to the demand
