Chap2.2 NC movement among Tribal People & Plantation Workers
Tribal People
The British government had closed large forest areas, preventing people from entering the forests to graze their cattle, or collect firewood & fruits
This enraged the hill people as their traditional rights were being denied
When the government asked them to do begar for road building, they revolted
They were led by Alluri Sitaram Raju who claimed to have special powers
He could make predictions, heal people & even survive bullet shots
The tribal people felt he is a reincarnation of God
He talked to them about the greatness of Ghandhiji & asked people to wear khadi & give up drinking
But he felt that India could be freed only by the use of force & not by non violence
He led the guerrilla warfare in the Gudem district of Andhra Pradesh
The rebels attacked police stations, killed British officials & carried on guerrilla warfare for achieving Swaraj
Raju was captured & executed but he became a folk hero
Plantation Workers
Plantation workers also had their own understanding of Gandhiji & the idea of Swaraj
For plantation workers in Assam, freedom meant the right to move freely in & out of the plantation & retaining a link with the village they had come from
Under the
Inland Emigration Act
, plantation workers were not allowed to leave the tea garden without permission & they were rarely given such permission
When they heard of the NC movement, thousands of workers left the plantation & headed home
They thought Gandhi Raj was coming & they would be given land in their own villages
However before reaching their villages, they were caught by the police& beaten up brutally
NC - Non Cooperation
CD - Civil Disobedience
