the instant he stopped, his face and nose became numb
The dog made no effort to indicate its fears to the man. It was not concerned with the well-being of the man
And then it happened. At a place where there were no signs, the man broke through. It was not deep. He was wet to the knees before he got out of the water to the firm snow.

All of the above indicates that the natural world couldn't care less about the man and his fragile masculinity, the weather didn't warm up, freezing his limbs and features one by one --- time didnt slow down, causing his slow and painful death ---- the dog didnt care about his well being, leaving him after he passed
man's arrogance

What was a little frost? A bit painful, that was all.
-
He did not bare his fingers more than a minute, and was surprised to find that they were numb
Then he knew what was wrong. He had forgotten to build a fire and warm himself. He laughed at his own foolishness
The way he brushed off the old man's advice, as if he knew better of another man's land. he was surprised by the numbing of his fingers even though he was well aware of the freezing weather. He mocked the frost claiming that its just "a bit painful". The way he laughs at his own foolishness. The fact that he -despite the obvious warning signs (thin ice, snow, etc)- went alone on the expedition.
