how did the berlin blockade and the berlin airlift affect soviet american relations
The Berlin Blockade
The soviet union blocks all roads and railways going into the soviet zone
this blocks all goods and people travelling from west germany into the soviet zone
why?
he is trying to isolate berlin from america britain and france thus meaning that he could gain complete control of berlin
therefore the other countries must find a method to get into berlin
option 1-- fly supplies into berlin
option 2-- send in tanks and break through-- general clay
there are several options that america considers when deciding how to respond to the blockade.
option 3-- give them berlin or negotiate
not earlier
1st jan 1947 britain and america unite their zones-- the bizone--
1st june 1948 france join their zone creating --the trizone--
june 1948 the trizone tries to implement a new currency called the deutschmark
blockade = 23rd june
stalin taken offence
they united but left him out
he is surrounded maybe military possibilities
by 23rd june 1948 it is clear that britain france and america intend to support the development of a strong capitalist western germany.
The Berlin Airlift
Why?
blasting through the blockade could lead to another war something that must not happen bit on the other hand they do not want to concede political ground to the soviets
decision was made on the 25th of june and the next day the first group of planes flew over to west berlin delivering vital supplies due to that the soviets had stopped supplying on the 25th
christmas 1948
100000 trips // 600,000 tonnes
planes were taking off and landing every 90 seconds in west Berlin airport
how did it affect relations
britain and america had been able to sidestep the blockade
relations are much the same
shows that the soviets cannot be trusted
the airlift will leave resentment on the soviet side as the Americans/british/french have one up

according to NATO an attack on any of the signataries will be treated as an attack against
