Definition: Location is WHERE a place IS

Relative Location: Using relative location by describing where a place in terms of other places using cardinal directions
Absolute Location: Using absolute location by finding the latitude and longitude
Region
Definition: Region describes an area with similar cultural or physical characteristics that sets it apart from other areas.
Can be described in 3 categories
Formal Regions: are identified by official boundaries and include cities, counties, states, and countries. They are clearly known and can be inside each other. Ex. Havre is in Hill County in Montana
Vernacular Regions: are areas that don't have a formal boundary but are commonly known regions. Ex. the West in the United States
Functional Regions: are made up of single place and the surrounding regions tied to it. Ex. Chicago is a large city with many suburbs and people live in the suburbs but work in the city
Human-Environment Interaction
Definition: H-E Interaction describes how people change their environment and how the environment changes the way that people live
Interaction can be looked at in 3 different ways
People ADAPT to their environment. Ex. Stilt houses in Burma allow people to live tidal areas with better fishing
People MODIFY their environment. Ex. In Brazil people burn down parts of the rain forest to clear land for farming.
People DEPEND on the environment. Ex. Rice farmers depend on the wet conditions for their crops to grow
Movement
Definition: Movement describes how goods, ideas, information, and people migrate
Movement could be done LOCALLY, NATIONALLY, or even GLOBALLY
