Marjane cares about the people around her. She wants the world to be a peaceful place sand bring joy and hope to everyone she is with. For example, she has plans to become a prophet and solve some of the world problems. (pg.6)
Marjane has many plans of a bright future. For example, even though people think she's crazy and has no chance of doing certain things, she doesn't let that stop her. (pg.8)
Marjane loves to read, she likes to read about a lot of things including history. For example, she began reading so much that her parents bought her plenty of books. (pg.12)
Marjane likes to learn a lot and is willing to listen even if the person teaching has a different opinion, for example, her father was explaining something to her and she willingly listened. (pg.19)
Marjane looks up to her father a lot and he helps teach her many things. She sometimes disagrees with what he says and vice versa.
They began to make all of the women wear veils as in order to "protect" them. Many of the women disobeyed at first but it soon became a law and was enforced on women everywhere.
In the book, people are very oppressed. They are told how to dress, what to wear, and basically what to think. The ideas of Islam have become so widely spread that it has become part of their culture.
Marjane strongly believe in God. For example, she is even seen to have talks with him at night. She believes that God has made all choices and can do no wrong. Although, she later begins to doubt this because the Shah was basically overthrown. (pg.13)
Marjane and practically everyone around her are Islamic. Even though some may not agree, like Marjane and her family, they still must follow the Islamic faith in order not to be harmed.
Once the war began against Iraq, many people were frightened. For example, many of Marjane's family members and friends began leaving for America for a better and safer life. This made Marjane very angry and she wanted to defend her country. (pg.79)
Once the Islamic Republic took over and they installed the Islamic Regime, many people were baffled and angry, including Marjane's father. For example, the schools were teacher the children falso things just so they would make it seem better. (pg.62)
Mother
Marjane's mother is a big influence on her and she wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and do things like her, such as protesting.
