definition
also called laryngotracheobroncchitis ,is an upper airway infection that blocks breathing and has a distinctive barking cough. Croup generally occurs in children.
cause
croup is usually caused by a virus infection most often a parainfluenza virus. A child may contract a virus by breathing infected respiratory dropplets coughed or sneezed in the air.
pathophysiology
Viral infection that causes croup leads to the swelling of the larynx , trachea and bronchi due to infiltration of white blood cells. Swelling produces airway obstruction which leads to difficulty in breathing and noisy airflow,stridor.
