- - - - Adipose CT- LOCATION: Under skin in hypodermic, around kidneys, eyeballs, in breasts and in abdomen. FUNCTIONS: Provides reserve fuel, insulates (against heat loss), supports and protects organs.
      - Reticular CT- LOCATION: Lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, bone marrow, and spleen). FUNCTION: Fibers create a soft internal structure like a skeleton that supports other cell types to include: mast cells, macrophages, and white blood cells.
      - Areolar CT- LOCATION: Found under epithelia of body, forms lamina propria of mucous membranes, packages organs, surrounds capillaries. FUNCTIONS:Protects and cushions organs, plays important role in inflammation, holds and conveys tissue fluid.
    - - Irregular (CT)- LOCATION: Fibrous capsules of organs and of joints, dermis of the skin, submucosa of digestive tract. FUNCTION: Withstands tension exerted in many directions, provides structural strength.
      - Elastic (CT)- LOCATION: Walls of large arteries, within certain ligaments associated with the vertebral column, within the walls of the bronchiole tubes. FUNCTION: Maintains pulsatile flow of blood through arteries, aids passive recoil of lungs following inspiration, allows recoil of tissue following stretching.
      - Regular (CT)- LOCATION: Tendons, most ligaments, aponeuroses (white sheet of fibrous tissue). FUNCTION: Attaches muscle to bones or to muscles, attaches bones to bones, withstands great tensile stress when pulling force is applied in one direction.
