Before she made it big
After graduating from Atlanta High School in 1976, Ellen went to the University of New Orleans as a communication major, but she dropped out after one semester.
Ellen had jobs like waiting tables, shucking oysters, serving as a bartender, painting houses, selling vacuum cleaners, and working as a legal secretary.
Her parents divorced in 1973, and she moved to Texas with her mother. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and Ellen was being secretly molested by her stepfather.
Ellen had smoked in the past but used Allen Carr's Easyway to Quit Smoking in 2005 and quit for good.

In 1982, Ellen was selected by pay-cable station Showtime as "America's Funniest Person".
Ellen has won 30 Emmys for her show, including Outstanding Talk Show (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) and three for Outstanding Talk Show Entertainment (2010, 2011, 2013).
Ellen has written two books, The Funny Thing Is... in 2003 and then Seriously...I'm Kidding in 2011.
