Causes:
-
However, there are risk factors known to affect your likelihood of developing breast cancer
Some of these you can't do anything about, however, some you can change to reduce your risk
Age - the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. The condition is most common in women aged 50+ who have been through the menopause. About 8 out of 10 cases of Breast Cancer happen in women over 50.
Family history - if you have close relatives that have had breast cancer or ovarian cancer, you may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. However, because Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women it is still possible for it to occur by chance.
Genes - particular genes known as BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 can increase your risk of developing both breast and ovarian cancer. It is also possible for these genes to be passed on from parent to child. Other newly detected genes known as TP53 and CHEK 2 are also associated with increased risk of breast cancer.
Exposure to Oestrogen can sometimes stimulate Breast cancer cells to grow making you more susceptible to the disease
Changes to body systems:
-
The lymphatic system normally helps to trap and destroy cancer cells as well as bacteria and other harmful organisms. Sometimes cancer cells get trapped in lymph nodes close to the cancer and may then start to grow there
Some forms or cancer and cancer treatments can change a number of blood cells circulating in the blood. Cancers can spread by shedding cells into the bloodstream that may then settle in another part of the body.
