Social and Economic impacts of flooding. Jiselle Ng (7) 2E4
Flooding causes people to be
injured
there will be
spread of diseases
and
loss of lives.
INJURIES
People might be injured by
objects
and
debris
washed along by
fast-moving floodwaters.
Floodwaters causes buildings to
collapse
&
injure
or
kill
people.
When people are caught in the flood for a
long period
of time, they can suffer from
hypothermia
with symptoms e.g: constant
shivering
,
confusion
, &
loss of coordination.
SPREAD OF DISEASES
Diseases may be
spread
&
affect
a larger population after a flood.
Water supplies may be
contaminated
by chemical spills from factories and sewage.
People will be
exposed
to contaminated drinking water & diseases e.g:
cholera
&
dysentery
will spread.
Stagnant
pools of floodwater will also encourage mosquitoes to
breed
, resulting in more cases of
malaria
&
dengue fever.
People may be stressed because they
lost their homes.
They might also suffer from
emotional distress
from the loss of their loved ones.
HOMELESSNESS
Floodwaters causes
damage
to property & even
sweep
houses away.
During floods, people may have to
evacuate
to emergency shelters. Some have to stay there for a
long period
of time after the flood while trying to
rebuild
their houses.
Flooding in cities tend to
affect
many people due to the
high population
densities.
DISRUPTION TO CLEAN WATER SUPPLY
The supply of clean water may be
disrupted
due to the
damaged
water pipes. Sewage pipes may also
burst
, causing sewage to
flow
&
contaminate
clean water supplies.
ECONOMIC IMPACTS
It refers to the
effects
of an event of goods & services being
produced
,
sold
&
bought.
During a flood, economic activities may stop due to the
damage
to
machinery
,
equipment
, &
transport infrastructure.
&
disruption
to energy supply.
DAMAGE TO MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT.
Floods can cause
damage
to machinery & equipment, the machinery & equipment may be
submerged
in the water & thus, this causes damage to the motors & other electrical components.
As a result, factories are
unable
to operate at full capacity &, thus, suffer
economic losses.
DAMAGE TO TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE
Transport Infrastructure
refers to facilities such as
roads
&
railway tracks
. During a flood, transport infrastructure may be
damaged
or
submerged.
DAMAGE TO ENERGY SUPPLY
Floods can
disrupt
the supply of energy by affecting it distribution.
The disruption of electrical supply can
affect
the capacity of factories & companies to
produce
goods & services.
Power lines might be
damaged
& power outages might occur during floods, & this can last for weeks before they are
restored
.
