Consequences of the Spanish conquest
Diseases
New goods and foods for European cultures
Destruction of Tenochtitlan
Slave Trade
Overview: Diseases such as; chicken pox, smallpox, measles, mumps, whooping cough, diphtheria, malaria, influenza and typhus spread across Tenochtitlan and surrounding countries and cities coursing wide spread death and sickness. Disease from the Spanish spread so fast and rapidly that it killed 9/10 Aztecs. So this was the end for 15 million Aztecs or 80 - 90% of its population at the time. This all happened in a space of 100 years which is outrages and cruel. Smallpox caused many wars, death and arguments. This is because when smallpox killed the emperor, civil war would break out and kill thousands upon thousands of people. But even if you didn't die from the war you were likely to die from smallpox spreading to you. This is because smallpox spread by hand to hand combat or being close to someone who was infected. Smallpox and other disease was a self-perpetuating problem and caused demographic catastrophe and much death. Because of these diseases such as smallpox spreading this caused the extinction of the Aztecs. The decrease in population caused decrease in food and goods which made an increase of disease. However, the Aztecs gave Europe some diseases too. One of the main diseases given by the Aztecs to Europe was syphilis. Which is a sexually transmitted disease which can causes serious health problems and can make you very sick.

Overview: However, the Aztecs gave the Europeans many goods and foods such as; cacao beans, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tobacco and corn. This is a very good thing for the new world because if this didn't happen we might not have pizza, pasta or chocolate and other great foods. Potatoes are a great food to feed people because it can feed 3x the amount of people because it has so many calories. Also corn fed 58% of animals in that time. So if corn didn't go to the Europe meats such a steak and pork wouldn't be as easy to find and wouldn't be a regular meal today. Nevertheless, Europe also gave the Americas some new foods as well such as; coffee beans, peach, pear, olive, banana, citrus fruits, sugar cane and grapes. All this trading of goods was called the Colombian exchange and was wide known then and still is now. All the trading led to the wide spread population increase in Europe and it also sadly lead to the slave trade in Africa and the Americas. Because Europe got all of this new produce it caused a population increase because they had just received many new foods to feed people. They also brought over livestock such as; cattle, sheep, pig and horse. With all this new livestock around the Indigenous people it spread even more disease because the livestock would contract the disease more easily. Because the Indigenous people live very close to animals sometimes even keep them in their own house this meant that they were highly likely to contract the disease from the livestock. Also the pigs would eat the majority of the crops which left the Aztecs to starve and die of hunger. However some animals made daily life easier for the native Americans because the animals could transport things around the city, towns and farms and make it easier to travel around. Because the Aztecs gave Europe tobacco this meant they could 'treat' wounded soldiers in WW2. I don't think this really treated them though because more died of smoking than the actual war.
Overview: Hernan Cortes a Spanish conquistador brought over Indigenous slaves over to Europe when he was explicitly told not to. However, this act of disobedience made the Spanish rich and powerful but made the Americas and Africans poor and in poverty. The brutal treatment of the Indigenous slaves made then die or unfit to work so they brought over enslaved African people to help them with their work. This changed the ethnic make-up of the population, so that majority of the population was African or Spanish not Indigenous Americans. This benefited Europe but it was at the expense of the Americas and Africa. The African slave trade was behind one of the great movements in the 18th and 19th centuries were up to 12 million Africans were enslaved and shipped to the Caribbean, South America and North America colonies before the slave trade was totally outlawed by the governments. Because of the enslavement of the African people now 47% of Africa live in poverty and live off less than $1.90 per day. This is around 500+ million Africans living without shelter and fresh food water and this all because of the slave trade that meant back in the 15th - 19th centuries.
Long Term Effects: Tobacco was a treatment in WW2. The doctors gave the wounded soldiers cigarettes to make them relaxed and calm when treated them. However, cigarettes killed more people than the actual war. The Colombian Exchange caused poverty in Africa today and this is one of the reasons why Africa is a poor country today. These introduced crops and animals eventually changed the landscape the Americas once had. We can now no longer see the uniqueness of the land it once looked like before the Colombian Exchange. The plantation of crops where they don't belong has modified and hurt the environment. The introduction of new species also caused extinction of many animals and crops in the Americas such as; Martinique Parrot (1722), Great Auk (1844) and the Caribbean Monk Seal (1952). The world population doubled because of the increased calories and exotic foods was in demand in Europe and Africa. Many foods were created because of the plants given to Europe by the Americas such as; pizza, pasta, curries and chocolate. Horses are well known in native American society because that is what they used to travel and transport things back in the 18 - 19 hundreds. Indians (native Americans) are known for horses and horses came from Europe in the Columbia exchange.
Short Term Effects: The planting of all those new crops effects the environment and killed native plantation. However, the planting of the crops created new foods such as pizza, pasta and chocolate. The food also doubled world population of that time which was a big effect. Europe gave the Aztecs cows, pigs and horses which remade food supply because they bread quickly which made less famine and more food. The livestock also spread more disease and killed even more people. Pigs also ate crops which caused more famine.
Long Term Effects: In 1568 the population of Central Mexico was 2.6 million which was 1 tenth of when Cortes arrived. Diseases caused wars because of leaders dying. One example of this was when the Inca leader and son died of smallpox. This lead to a civil war for who would claim the title of the next leader. This killed thousands for no reason because in the end one of the other leaders son took the title. Because of the death of all the Aztecs it improved the vaccines and cures today for all these disease to prevent this tragedy again. It has also warned people today about what havoc these diseases can causes.
Short Term Effects: Death of leaders caused wide spread civil war and even more death. It also helped spread smallpox because it spread by hand to hand contact. With all of this death it caused a decrease in population which caused a decrease in food which caused an increase in disease.
Long Term Effects: This caused most of Africa to be in poverty today and a 3rd world country. Because of all these slaves it improved infrastructure for the Spanish and made them a very advanced country. Racism was introduced into America and the indigenous population decreased because of all the deaths that was happening.
Short Term Effects: The slave trade made Spain very rich and wealthy and made them a very advanced colony of its time. This is also killed many innocent Africans and native Americans. The Aztecs were forced to run their own lands and were prone to disease because they were malnourished and lived close to animals.
Long Term Effects: The Destruction of Tenochtitlan caused the Aztec religion to be wiped out. Which is a good thing because otherwise we would have even more people killing each other to give to their Gods and leaders. This also caused 'modern era' and modern day Mexico today.
Short Term Effects: The destruction of Tenochtitlan caused the extinction of the Aztecs and caused Spain to become even more wealthy. The Spanish also ruled over all the surrounding counties and cities as well because the Aztecs used to run and be the most powerful country in the Americas. It caused the death of over 100,000 Aztecs over a 3 month period.

Overview: The Aztecs had no chance against the Spanish because the Spanish had more advanced weapons and had more soldiers to fight for them. And even worse for the Aztecs their enemies help Hernan Cortes raid and destroy Tenochtitlan. The people that allied with Spain were Texcoco and Tlacopan. These colonies had already been defeated by the Aztecs and were now run over by the Aztecs. Disease spread across Tenochtitlan in October 1520 and decimated the population and killed the ruler Cuitlahuac who was replaced by Cuauhtemoc. The Spanish surrounded the city of Tenochtitlan and more Indigenous groups joined the Spanish and helped them fight against the Aztecs. They provided more supplies and manpower giving the Spanish an even greater advantage over the Aztecs. Finally the attackers broke in and fought the Aztecs on the streets of Tenochtitlan (this may be how smallpox spread more, because of hand to hand combat). Over a space of 3 months 100,000 Aztecs died ans many others suffered the punishments of the Spanish afterword the Spanish made more and more progress in defeating Tenochtitlan and conquering the Americas. The Aztecs fought till the very last warrior and never gave up. However, eventually they surrendered on August 13 1521 after Cuauhtemoc and his chief warriors attempted to escape by canoe but failed and were captured by the Spanish. The Aztec lands were renamed 'New Spain' and Mexico would be a Spanish colony until it started to fight for its rights in 1810. The destruction of Tenochtitlan lead to the 'modern era' and had characteristics such as migration, globalisation, trade networks, a wider base of knowledge and challenges to belief systems.
Link: Disease helped the Spanish defeat the Aztecs empire and to destroy Tenochtitlan.
Link: When the Spanish came over to the Americas they brought disease which caused wide spread disaster and death. Animals spread disease to the Aztecs because they didn't have a stronger enough immune system to handle the diseases and the Aztecs work close to animals.
Link: Because of The Colombian exchange it caused Africans and native Americans to be in the slave trade and forced to do things for the Spanish. Because the Aztecs had to work their own land the were prone to disease and caught to disease more frequently.
Link: Because the Aztecs surrendered this meant that they were under the leadership of the Spanish. The Spanish made the Aztecs into slaves to help them out. Aztecs were brought over to Europe.
Link: Diseases spread through the Africans and Aztecs because of being in slavery and their malnourished bodies.
Link: The Spanish defeated the Aztecs and claimed all their goods such as crops, gold and silver.
