        In the Torah, God chose Abraham to e the father of the Jewish people

    - - The book of Genesis says God told Abraham to move his people to Canaan
        
        Israelites settled in Canaan, between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea
        
        1800 B.C ➢ Abraham, his family, and their herds make their way to Canaan

        According to the Hebrew Bible, Canaan was the land God promised the Israelites
        
        Why did God choose this land for the Israelites?
        
        The seaports opened onto the two most important waterways of that time, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea
  - - - Israelites were monotheists, meaning they prayed to only one God.
        Other groups around them were polytheists, meaning they prayed to multiple gods
      - Israelites believed god was not a physical being and no physical image could be made of him
    - - Covenant is a mutual promise between Abraham and God. God promised to watch over Abraham and his descendants as long as Abraham kept his promise to obey God
- - - - Between 1200 - 1300 B.C. the Jewish people fled Egypt in an event known as "The Exodus."
        
        The Exodus was lead by a man named Moses.
        
        During the time of Moses's birth the Pharaoh was threatened by the number of Israelites, and he ordered all male babies to be killed.
        
        Moses escaped when his mother placed him in the Nile river. He was found by the pharaoh's daughter and was raised by her.
        
        Moses did not forget where he came from, and when God commanded him to free his people from Egypt he obeyed.
        
        Before returning to Canaan the Israelites travel through the desert for fourth years. After Moses died they settled in Canaan, giving up their nomadic ways.

      - Why did the Egyptian's view on the Israelites change?
  - - - These commandments became the basis of Jewish Law and values. If the Israelites kept the commandments God would protect them.
      - Important Jewish documents such as the Torah had to be carried in an ornamental chest called an ark
        
        The Torah is a compilation of books that record law and the time of Mosses.

        Solomon was David's son.
        
        Solomon was the most powerful of all kings. He built a trading empire, also he made the capital city beautiful.

        Solomon's temple was not large, but it was beautiful.

        The temple was stone on the outside, while its inner walls were cedar covered in gold.

        Why did Solomon tax his people to this extent?
      - King one: Saul
        
        Saul was successful driving out the Philistines from Central Hills.
- - - - To avoid this conflict both nations paid tribute, or money, to Assyria in exchange for peace.
        
        The Northern kingdom, Israel, withheld their tribute. Assyria took the capital city and controlled the North.
        
        The Southern kingdom, Judah, resisted for 150 years before falling to the Babylonians.
        
        Now that the North was controlled by Assyria, and the South by Babylon the Babylonians quickly took control of both regions.
        
        When Babylon took Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar attacked the capitol city twice. Kings Solomons temple was destroyed in the process.
        
        After the attacked survivors were exiled to Babylon, this included thousands of those practicing Judaism.
        
        The Hebrew Bible says the prophet Ezekiel encouraged them to continue their religion in a foreign place.
        
        50 years fallowing the exile the Persian King Cyrus took over Babylon. He aloud 40,000 exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their temple.
