Scientists believe that many different genes may increase the risk of schizophrenia, but that no single gene causes the disorder by itself. It is not yet possible to use genetic information to predict who will develop schizophrenia. It is more probable that if there is a member of your family who has the illness, you are more likely to develop schizophrenia. If it’s a parent, brother, or sister, your chances go up by 10%. If both your parents have it, you have a 40% chance of getting it, too. Scientists also think that interactions between genes and aspects of the individual’s environment are necessary for schizophrenia to develop.
