Water Properties- Vocabulary
Adhesion
the ability of water molecules to attract to each other
ex. raindrops sticking to glass, water sticking to a towel
Capillary Action
the process that moves water through a narrow porous space
ex. water moving up through a straw/plant stem
Cohesion
the ability of water molecules to attract toward each other
ex. water "dome," raindrops
Specific Heat
the amount of energy it takes to raise the temp. of a substance by 1 degree celcius
water has a high specific heat (4.186 joules)
ex. the ocean doesn't drastically change temperature, water is used for temperature regulation
Surface Tension
the force that acts on the particles at the surface of a material
ex. water striders, painful belly flop
Bouyancy
the ability of an abject to float in water
ex. a boat, floating in the ocean or pool
Density
the measure of mass of a substance/unit of volume
ex. ice floating on water, oil and water separating
Polarity
when one molecule has opposite charges on each of it's ends
ex. H2O is polar b/c hydrogen is positive and oxygen is negative
Universal solvent
water b/c it can dissolve the most substances
ex. water can dissolve soap, sugar, salt, baking soda, toothpaste, etc.
