Thoughts on Chapter 2 & But That's Just Good Teaching…

- - - - I think it is important to know the definitions of all these words
        
        SES- economic status: occupation, educational attainment, and income.
        
        Gender- behavioral, cultural, and psychological traits typically associated with a male or female
        
        Ethnicity-membership based on one's national origin or the national origin of one's ancestors when they migrated to the United States.
        
        Sexual orientation- one's sexual attraction to persons of the same or opposite se or both
        
        Disability- a long-standing physical, mental, or emotional condition that can make it difficult for a person to do activities.
        
        Cultures- socially transmitted ways of thinking, believing, feeling, and acting within a group.
    - - Know the Students
      - Know their Families
      - Know the realities of their everyday lives.
- - - - Educators must understand that race & ethnicity in schools continues to grow in the U.S.
        
        Figure 2.1 on Page 48 presents the projected change in diversity of the school-age population. With the white population decreasing and the others increasing.
        
        Increasing Achievement Gap/Achievement Opportunity for students from different racial and ethnic groups.
        
        Additional learning time, better instruction, and more resources. (Boykin & Noguera. 2011)
        
        Educators must take upon the responsibility of ensuring all students perform up to standards.
      - Understanding the students means their SES, gender,race, ethnicity, language religion, sexual orientation, mental and physical abilities, and age (pg. 44)
        
        I think this sums up the chapter best in my head, because it demonstrates the complexities of not just students, but teachers and that educators must be adaptive in how they present curriculum, the environment they provide, and how a teacher as an individuals must have an open-mind for all students.
        
        A few things I learned from each topic.
        
        ETHNICITY
        
        Ethnic Studies helps provide students and teachers with in-depth examination of a certain group.
        
        LANGUAGE
        
        There are a large amount of ELLs in the U. S. so as a teacher I should learn how to teach them and if so take the chance to learn another language.
        
        RACE
        
        Understanding race helps educators understand how students understand the world
        
        RELIGION
        
        Religion has influence on values and lifestyle of student, so understanding these helps a teacher's with better understanding of the students and create a mindset that does not allow their own beliefs to interfere with their ability to provide equal educational opportunities.
        
        SES
        
        We must allow the students from low- income families to be valued and develop instructional strategies that benefit them.
        
        SEXUAL ORIENTATION
        
        Important to understand because it is a teacher's job to understand LGBTQ students and children of LGBTQ. As well, to provide a safe environment.
        
        GENDER
        
        It is important to understand the qualities of both genders and possible differences in learning preferences and to break stereotypes that hold each back.
      - I can personally attest as a hispanic from a low- income family that when educators take the diversity of their students into account and genuinely know their students it helps the students tremendously.
        
        Teaching is more than providing a student information, it is an adaptive occupation where teachers must acquire a sympathetic mindset that allows them to provide every student with an equal opportunity of being adequately educated.
